Suwannee Swing Saloon Enters NPR Tiny Desk Competition

Western Swing may be coming to the NPR Tiny Desk Concert!

Fort Myers, Fla -

Today, the Suwannee Swing Saloon submitted it’s entry into the 2019 NPR Tiny Desk Contest.

The short music video features all of the Suwannee Swing Saloon members performing their latest piece titled “21st Century Cowboy” with music and lyrics by band leader Hunter Dahlen.

The new piece serves as a lighthearted commentary on the new-age of country music which, in some cases, may employ a musician without a discernible background in what one might consider the authentic “roots” of what traditional country music stems from; à la the prototypical rural, agrarian, small-town America.

But that isn’t to say Dahlen, writer of the piece, fails to embrace his own lack of the fabled “country music lifestyle” as he acknowledges his upbringing in Southern Florida - where beaches and bikinis tend to outnumber cowboy boots and 10-gallon hats.

Though Dahlen may not fit the country musician archetype in the conventional sense, the music of the song itself stays true to the traditional western swing musical style.

As for the contest itself, the preliminary judging period will begin April 15, 2019 and the grand-prize winner is expected to be announced on or about May 10, 2019.

Should the Suwannee Swing Saloon’s entry be selected as the winner, the group will have the opportunity to perform live at NPR’s headquarters in Washington D.C. on May 28, 2019 as part of NPR’s Tiny Desk series.. In addition, the group may have additional opportunities to perform live at NPR Music events in Los Angeles, CA; New York, NY; Austin, TX; and Seattle, WA between June and July 2019.
